Financial Data Centre

Customer:

Travelers Insurance Company Ltd is part of Travelers Companies, Inc with a global Turnover of $25 billion. In the UK Travelers provides; property-liability insurance and risk management services for industries, professions and the public sector.

Challenges:

  • Provide remote access to data centres to save time, costs and comply with SARBANES-OXLEY regulations
  • Improve data centre efficiency

Solution:

AIT Partnership Group recommended an integrated solution manufactured by Raritan to deliver secure remote access to servers and IT assets and accurate metering and reporting of the power consumed by each asset.

Following a series of mergers the Travelers Companies conducted a global assessment of their IT infrastructure to ensure compliancy with SARBANES-OXLEY and improve efficiency. As a result it was decided that the European data centres required extensive upgrading. "At that time, people could more or less walk in and out of the communication room" Mike Taylor, Technical Analyst at Travelers.

The solution installed by AIT provided a Raritan Dominion KX II KVM-over-IP switch in each rack with Virtual Media support to remotely upload files and maintain servers without having to enter the data centre. The mission critical data centre was given 'redundant' protection thanks to the KX IIs dual power supplies and dual Ethernet ports and enhanced by AIT's design of a “mirrored” configuration to ensure 100% uptime of the remote access solution.

The KX IIs are integrated into Raritan's CommandCenter Secure Gateway (CCSG) to provide a single portal into Travelers IT Assets. This ensures that all access is logged and authenticated through Active Directory® services.

To meet the second part of the brief from Travelers AIT recommended that Raritan's Dominion PX intelligent rack level power distribution units (PDUs) were installed so that accurate real live data on power consumption and heat output could be collected and reported using Power IQ management software. This helps charge back of energy and carbon pricing models, identifies underused assets and provides accurate information to manage data centre capacity.

Every rack in their data centre has been fitted with a PX on each power feed which provides full metering and switching on each outlet. The PXs are accessed individually through their Ethernet ports using a web browser or by using the optional Power IQ software for reporting, trending and configuration. In Travelers case this is integrated into the CCSG for added security and auditing purposes.

Travelers have seen real savings as a result of implement the Raritan technology. It has also helped their IT and Facilities teams communicate.

Commenting on the relationship with AIT and Raritan over the years, Mike Taylor, Technical Analyst at Travellers is positive:

"At a time when strong demands were placed on me and my colleagues to completely re-build our datacenters, both AIT Partnership and Raritan demonstrated their expertise at all times, they listened to our requirements and came up with a solution providing me with excellent tools. The total solution gives me complete knowledge and control of my datacenters and I can rely on both companies to support me in the future."
